Dr Gary Jackson is a fisheries scientist with 35+ year’s research experience working on a broad range of projects in freshwater, estuarine and marine environments focused on the biology and dynamics of exploited fish stocks, stock assessment and fishery management. He currently holds a position as Principal Research Scientist with the Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) based at the Western Australian Fisheries and Marine Research Laboratories in Perth where he leads the Strategic & Statewide group responsible for coordinating research on the impacts of climate change on WA fisheries, electronic monitoring of commercial fisheries and ecological risk assessments. Other current areas of interest include shark depredation, monitoring and management of recreational fishing and evaluation of hatchery-based fish stocking. He led the DPIRD team working on the WAMSI-Westport Science Program, is science/technical member of the Shark Bay World Heritage Scientific Advisory Committee and has represented WA on the Redmap Steering Committee since 2012. He has been a member of the Australian Society for Fish Biology since 1992, serving as the national conference-workshop coordinator from 2005-2013 and as President from 2013-2015. He was made a life member in 2017. He is also a member of the American Fisheries Society.
